Vive les mariés!!! To the bride and groom!

A quick personal family message:
It's the 26 June and even though we're far away (what a strange notion my family had to go and live in the South of France?!!!), we wish all the very best to my uncle Jean-Francois et Micheline who are tying the knot today...!

We send you both all our love, and the pièce montée will arrive soon in the mail!

Happy Miniatures!

France has had another day of strikes today during which the 'disgraced' French national football team slipped back into the country after their early exit from the football World Cup following lots of squabbling and a refusal to train...

To add to the nation's misery, the French tennis player Nicolas Mahut finally lost the record-breaking 11 hour tennis match at Wimbledon....at least people have heard of him now...!

So we did our bit to boost the nation's morale the only way we know how - by making some new miniatures!

Morale boosted!

There.  Don't you fell better now...?!  Head over to our Etsy store and boost your morale!!

SIMP Miniatures Show 2010

We had a really enjoyable day at the SIMP miniatures show which took place in Paris yesterday. We met lots of lovely smiley-faced people (name checks further down this post).  It's always a welcome change to meet people face-to-face rather than virtually, and to be able to have a real conversation.

And we couldn't have been better placed - in between the talented Véronique Bailleul (thanks for the Bounty!) and Michelle LeBouteiller.  In fact it was Véronique that advised me to do a show a few years back.

We thought you might enjoy some photos of our stand.  We only had one metre of space into which we had to cram about three metre's worth of miniatures, but exceptionally, having arrived more than the traditional 10 minutes before the show opened (early mornings?  Yuk!) we had time to play around before the hoards were let in.  And I just found a whole drawer full of stock that I forgot to take and hadn't even realised until now... :-/

OK, some of the smiley-faces...!

Rosanna, who was doing her first show with her gorgeous needlepoint, Christel, (oooooh my god, can you believe I forgot about this clock I wanted until this morning?!!!!  Well, it seems you forgot as well:) Synnove, Marcella, Jackie from Scotland, Sophie (happy two year wedding anniversary for today!), ElenaArantxa, Corinne, Anita, Annabelle (who makes the most exquisite miniature babies).  And of course, Marie-Pierre, who was (all always will be!) the very first "Emmaflam & Miniman" customer :o)

A big thank you to Peiwen for the lovely hortensia flower and all of her kind words about my work :o)

I just had to put one of my miniature ones with it!
J'ai pas pu résister!

And sweetest surprise of the day?  Leyla, Annabelle's cute daughter who loves cakes and seems taken with my mini cakes has set her heart on doing the same and sent her Mum to the show with some miniature liquorice and a tiny box that she made from Fimo.  And for a 6 year old, I think she's off to a flying start!

SIMP preview... / avant goût

The last few days have passed by in a blur as we try to get everything ready for the SIMP miniatures show in Paris tomorrow.

Stock?  Yep!
Pencil? Yep
Sandwiches? Big yep!
Change?  .........oops

And I still have things waiting for a coat of varnish!!

We also wanted to take some nice photos of the pieces before they go off to their new homes tomorrow (hopefully!).

We hope you'll enjoy this glimpse...

A small quantity of the pastries that we'll be showing

Could they be real?....
....I wish they were - YUM!

And if you're not able to come, you don't have to miss out this weekend.  We always try to make a brand new exclusive miniature for the occasion and this year is no different!  A limited quantity of our new "Paris Chocolate" souvenir boxes are available right now...

OK, I'm off!  My cupcakes won't varnish themselves (if only....!).  Bon weekend!

Wild Strawberry Tarts! / Tarte aux fraises !

Woodland strawberries with blossom
We've been so occupied getting ready for the SIMP recently that we forgot about our little strawberry patch.

What started off as six rather poorly looking plants that we ...ahem... "acquired" from the grounds of the Chateau de Chantilly a couple of years ago, is now a thriving patch of green.  Last year alone we had enough fruit to make 3 pots of jam and a litre of ice cream :o)

Something was telling me I just had to
make a dessert with them...
As some of them were very ripe, I decided the best thing to do with them was to make a tart.

I made the delicious sweet coconut pastry myself; these fruits deserved better than that ready-made stuff!

And as usual we couldn't resist the opportunity to whip out a couple of miniatures and take a few photos of everything together.

The closest I had available was a miniature "red fruit tart" and a tartelette, but it's close enough!

The finished REAL strawberry tart with a sprig of garden mint

Lovely home-made pastry with coconut

Miniature tart and tartelette with
the full-sized real tart

Strawberries on a bed of crème pâtissière - made that too :-p

Miniature tartelette next to a wild strawberry blossom on a real tartelette

Miniature red fruit tart on home-made strawberry tart
Hopefully we'll have some more to pick before long 'cos they were bloody delicious!

Fresh New Site! / Nouveau Site !

With the SIMP coming up this weekend, we thought it was high time that our site was given a bit of a face-lift.

And here it is!  (Drum roll.....)

Once upon a time... / il était une fois...

I've just stumbled upon some old photos containing some of my work from waaaaay back.  At the time miniature-making was purely a very enjoyable hobby and much of what I made was used to decorate my apartment's walls!

Vitrine for the birth of a girl
One thing that I used to really enjoy making were "vitrines"; tiny room-boxes featuring a detailed scene.  In fact at that time, it was the logical choice because individual miniatures as we know and love them were not widespread in France (sadly still the case).  "Vitrines" do seem the acceptable way for the French to 'consume' miniatures.  Dollshouses other than the likes of Barbie and Playmobil (and I love them both!) are really not in the French culture.

When I did try to sell individual miniatures not contained in one of my vitrines, the response was often comical - "Well, what would I do with THAT?!" - "It will only collect dust!" etc...

From time-to-time a friend or a colleague would ask me to make a vitrine for a special occasion, usually the birth of a child.  They provided me with photos of the new-born and any brothers and sisters and a list of the parents likes and tastes and then would leave me to come up with something.

I created the piece shown here for my English teacher's newly born grand daughter.  Almost everything used in the making of my vitrines was generally made by me from scratch using whatever I had to hand.  There were no on-line tutorials to make things easy at the time (!), no blogs where I could find inspiration when I reached a dead end.  But this meant that I had to rely on my own creativity and ingenuity - something which really helps me in my work today.

The only thing I actually bought was the wooden picture frame (10x15cm) and I stripped it down and repainted it!

And I did all that with a minimum of tools (a good cutter and a straight edge - not even a ruler!).
Each vitrine could take me a couple of weeks to create - I had a job to fit in too!  And because I really enjoyed making these settings, and not knowing any better, I sold them for peanuts!! :-p

As you probably know we're up to our eyeballs in preparations for the SIMP, but when it's over, we'll maybe start photographing the setttings that I still have and show you a whole new side to my work.  After all, there's more to miniatures than just food, right?!

My little sister has great taste; the proof, when I made some jewellery based on the French Opéra chocolate cake, she called me straight away asking for some...

Yep, what great taste! ;-)

As she's also very gifted with her tiny hands when it comes to polymer clay, we worked out a swap.....I sent her the Opéras (she lives far away down in the South of France does my little sis...) and the time has passed by and all I get is "I'll do it next week!".   It's been nearly a year....

While I wait patiently, she has just sent me this:

Heureusement, pour me faire patienter, elle m'a envoyé ça:

Russian doll ring

Merci Stouf'

....which she didn't even make herself, the lazy thing!  But I REALLY wanted it!  Thanks Stouf!

Made by Cristalline

I was bowled over by Cristalline's Russian Doll / Matriochka rings a while back, but never got round to ordering one, and now, I have one :-)
