"SIMP"le pleasures! A bowl of fruit...

With Easter out of the way, it's time to knuckle down with preparations for June's SIMP show in Paris.

It's frightening to think that in a little over two months I need to come up with enough new pieces to fill our stand.  Panic and self-doubt set in and I'm like a rabbit frozen in the headlights of an oncoming car and not knowing which way to turn...

So I've been looking back through our pictures for inspiration and there are so many great pieces that I'd forgotten about.  It was as if I was seeing many of them for the first time!  That's the problem when you're only making one of each item - you don't remember all of them. :-p

This bowl of citrus fruit caught my eye...it's been ages since I made any fruit so maybe I should start there...this one dates from 2007 already...

In any case, I'm looking forward to the day of the show to be able to meet those die-hard collectors who visit every French show, no matter how small and far away from home it is.  I'm also really excited about meeting for the those collectors that I've only spoken to 'virtually' and who are coming to the SIMP for the first time!

Real miniature cakes / Petits gateaux

It's not yet warm enough here for a barbecue but why should we let that stop us from enjoying some kebabs?!

Here they are:  mini cakes (chocolate, raspberry, lemon and poppy seed and....matcha green tea, which didn't make it on to the skewer....but why not?!

...because it was my first attempt with this famous green powder...and probably my last!  I did not like the taste.  Neil ate them, but I think it was just so that they didn't go to waste...

So next time I'll stick to more traditional flavours; you can't go wrong with chocolate, coffee, vanilla, pistachio...and this evening.....rum raisin!

The big advantage with these cakes was that because they were so small, wolfing down a dozen would only be the equivalent of eating a single slice of 'normal' cake. The soft, almost moist texture is really pleasant and quite unlike any other kind of cake. I think this is going to become a favourite recipe!

The recipe can be found in this charming little book:

American Pastries - Vive l'Amerique !

They say that "variety is the spice of life" and I wanted a change from making even more French pastries.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my country's pastries, but one does get a bit fed up after years spent making hundreds (thousands?!) of miniature macaroons, religieuses, Saint-Honorés, Paris-Brest etc...

There are some delicious desserts on the other side of the Atlantic, but it's difficult in provincial France to lay your hands on pecans, so until I can sort that out and make a real pecan pie, here's one that measures a couple of centimetres.  And I'll soon make a real Key lime pie, because we're missing Dexter ;-)

The American pastries are now on Etsy, click here to see them.

Easter Cookies with Tiny Eggs / Cookies de Pâques

Occasionally time just slips by unnoticed.  Despite our best intentions to be organised and prepared, you can suddenly find yourself, due to no fault of your own, behind where you wanted to be.

This was the case LAST Easter when I was a good girl and decided to prepare some miniature Easter eggs way in advance of Easter.  I hand-formed 200 tiny jelly bean eggs (yes, I counted them - obsessed?  Me?!).  Really tiny eggs....here they are in a photo from last year with some grains of basmati rice.

All was going to plan until one of Neil's nephews decided at the last minute that he'd love to come over from the UK and spend Easter with us - panic!

We had to quickly reorganise what we were going to do for Easter and in the end, I never found time to do anything with my 200 mini eggs.

So I stored them away.
Je les ai rangés....

And I forgot about them.
Et je les avais oubliés!

Until a couple of days ago when they suddenly popped out from under a pile of....something...I can't even remember what...

And I was determined that they were not going to spend another year sitting around unused!

So I quickly put together a few pieces in order to use them.

It might not seem like it, but all 200 eggs were used in the making of this little set.  Well, exactly 196 - the other 4 flew left and right as I tried to pick them up with my pointy tweezers and a good few dropped onto the floor and rolled under furniture to be found later....like "years-from-now" later...

Anyway, I hope you enjoy seeing this little set which was a year in the making!

And for us it was worth the wait because we had a great time showing Neil's nephew the sites!  Hopefully we'll get to see him and the rest of the family very, very soon :o)
Finalement, on s'est bien amusés à jouer les touristes à Paris, c'était drôlement chouette Pâques (on dirait le "petit Nicolas"!)

It's behind you! C'est derrière toi!
HAPPY EASTER!
Joyeuses Pâques les gens!

Little Bunny, Big Bunny

If you see this little bunny out and about his weekend, be kind to him, stroke him, give him lots of affection...

Whatever you do to him, treat him kindly, because this little cutie.....

.....has a much bigger brother!
....il appelle son grand frère!

Bisous !
What a team they make!
Quelle équipe de choc(olat)!

It's our miniature interpretation of the classic Lindt Golden Rabbit! :)
